Week Nineteen

There's a ton of adolescent frogs back there, like this guy, who have grown up in the backyard. They hate it when I mow the lawn.

How you get over? Are we “running out of time out here”? The struggle is alive and well and the Next Movement is back to remind us of it with a 42-minute album that will keep your head checkin’ it and your soul questionin’.

But you’ll keep coming back to this title track, about these damn cold streets, where “every man is for himself” and this “warzone” — this endless war on our poor. “Where no body cares about you, only thing you’ve got is God.” After hearing it, you’ll be thankful for someone to worry about you.

With featured guests like Monsters of Folk, John Legend and Joanna Newsome, The Roots prove they’re more than just another late night house band — they’re great collaborators, making something more powerful than any one of them solo.

On “Dear God 2.0,” they loop Jim James and make a weak song shine — with a slower delivery and some rare-for-their-genre self introspection.

On “Right On,” Joanna Newsome gets “we should shine a light on” stuck in your head and it makes you want to go out and change the world.

On “Walk Alone,” Black Thought gets his “Charlie Parker on” and sing the blues.

And they’re still doing what they do best: keeping it positive with tracks like “Hustla” and “The Fire” and “rising out of the flames like a Phoenix,” like in “Doin’ it Again.”

When I tried to jam my whole name into 16 pixels by 16 pixels, it didn’t look too swell. Just cramming seven letters looked better.

My new ico

A favicon.ico is a small icon that browsers use to add some flair to the window tabs and bookmark links. It’s the closest I’ll ever come to corporate branding.

I also modified my functions.php file in my WordPress theme to include the code to call the .ico on every page within the blog.

The new BrandonMoeller.com

It has been two weeks since my last redesign.

My redesign project for BrandonMoeller.com began on July 5 and ended a week later on July 11, and I’m very happy with the results.

The previous design had served me well for a number of years, from Feb. 6, 2008 to July 5, 2010.

It was time for a change.

COLORS

I started by deciding on a color palette. I chose “Good Friends” desgined by Colour Lovers user Yasmino.

FONTS

Next, I chose Franklin Gothic FS by FontSite Inc. to be my official font, so I bought the whole family from FontSpring.com, and unlimited licenses to put it on as many websites as I please. The two fonts currently used on the site are Franklin Gothic FS Medum Condensed and Franklin Gothic FS Book. I even incorporate these fonts in my blog.

A picked a (free) secondary font from FontSpring called Merge Regular from Philatype. I really like this font, but I just don’t have many places to put it at the moment. Currently, it makes the text in my sidebar on my “Hire Me” page stand apart.

A SIMPLER DESIGN

I wanted a simplistic design that would allow the content to shine. So, I spent a lot of time revising my content, consolidating pages and reducing clutter. I got it down to five pages, and developed intuitive titles for the pages: “home,” “about,” “hire me,” “photos,” and “blog.” I wanted my homepage to be free of the boring introductory text that — for whatever reason — everyone else is convinced they must have. However, I think visitors to my website are aware that they’re at my website, and I’d rather have graphics and the content to do the talking.

Being a fan of the social media, I wanted to maintain my previous website’s homepage feature that listed all of my other pages out there on the Internet. But, instead of a list, I decided to make vector-based graphics for my 10 favorite external sites. Hovering over these images reveals a splash of color and movement. Soon, I’ll probably use the jQuery javascript library to add more icons in a slider format for the other websites I didn’t have room to mention.

FACEBOOK + PICASA

Also, I wanted to tap into the Facebook API on the homepage. At launch, I added the famous “like” button to the homepage, and future plans including a Facebook comment box on every page. That’s coming soon. I want more people to hit that “like” button, first, though — before I go to the trouble. Ahem. I’m talking to you.

I also created a new section for my photos using a javascript that embeds my Picasa Web Albums right onto my website, making it appear as though the photos are housed on BrandonMoeller.com. The JavaScript I used was written by Jesse Berman and works just like he promised it would on the open source website SourceForge.

THE NEW BLOG

Last but not least – certainly not least because it probably took up most of the time I spent during the redesign — I updated my WordPress blog from version 2.6 something to the brand new WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious.” I then took the new standard WordPress theme of Twenty Ten and built on top of it, customizing it to look like the design I created for the new BrandonMoeller.com, allowing for a seamless experience for my blog visitors. When I get around to it, I’ll likely make the new BrandonMoeller.com into a template file that can be publicly downloaded for anybody who wants to mimic my design, as well as make my WordPress theme build-on available.

I’m also now tracking the traffic of my website with Google Analytics — I’m very impressed with what the tool allows me to discover about my visitors.

A lot can happen in 14 years, and I’m sad to report that there is no powerhouse well-written single like “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart” or “Vaseline” on the new record.

There’s a lot of what you’d expect, though — some crunchy, roarin’ rock songs from two brothers and a recovering rock star.

The disc opens with “Between the Lines,” with Scott Weiland belting:

“I like it when you talk about love
You always were my favorite drug.
Even when we used to take drugs.”

I bet you’ll be hearing a few of the more infectious cuts off this record on your mainstream radio, including the first single “Between the Lines.” The video of which, found on their website, features what you’d expect of the band made famous by MTV: An attractive model who keeps putting on her clothes and an aging Weiland withering and waltzing to the music.

Other radio-worthy gems: “Hickory Dichotomy,” “Cinnamon,” and “Maver,” the last of which closes out the disc and is a song that has it all — including ponies and pendejos — and the ever-important question, “How many nights did you make it without it?”

Of course, it wouldn’t be a STP record if there weren’t some pretty ridiculous songs thrown in the mix. For instance, “Dare if you Dare” must be one of the lamest songs I’ve ever heard. Ever. I won’t even dignify “Bag Man” with my criticism, let’s just pretend that track was never pressed.

All in all, I’m glad the band that got me through junior high alive and emotionally accessible is back at it again. It’s good to hear old friends again, even if on “First Kiss on Mars” someone sounds a  little too much like Bowie, in a stab at a radio-friendly summer love song complete with “super magic robots” and a free “solar system.”

If the album were to hinge on one thought, it’d be a line from the second track “Take a Load Off,” an otherwise boring song: “Could our shattered past just set us free?”

Here’s hoping that Weiland stays in the studio and out of the jailhouse.

Buy the deluxe edition. The live material and the added cut “Samba Nova” is worth the extra scratch.

Like in “12 Gracious Melodies” on Purple Weiland takes the opportunity to croon on the bonus track:

“You can always buy a new lie
When yours is finally over
Either way you’ll find a new life
When yours is finally over.”

OK OK OK, before we go any further, the obligatory disclaimer: She ain’t doin’ nuthin new. See Elton John, Madonna, Cher plus countless others who arguably have done it better. But, they did it then. This is now.

I mean, seriously. We have a disaster fustercluck in the Gulf. We have a liberal president who all my extremist wacko relatives hate — passionately — yet, we’re still entangled in two endless wars, the economy’s still  a flatliner, and all we got is some minor gains in the student loan and debit card rackets. Social security? Still broken, we won’t see any of it. And we have a fustercluck in the gulf. And tar balls in Galveston! And we’re all oil-guzzling accessories to it, one could argue, or …

We can listen to Lady Gaga, singing:

“Sorry I can’t hear you I’m kinda busy.
…
Stop calling, stop calling, I don’t want to think anymore.
I left my head and my heart on the dance floor.”

Play that “Telephone” track, and like — heh — who cares if John Cornyn’s about to throw a hissy-fit on the senate floor over Elena Kagan, lowering himself to Orrin Hatch’s level. I mean, I’m kinda busy.

On “Dance in the Dark,” she advises:

Find your freedom in the music.
Find your Jesus. Find your Cupid.

Nevermind Rick Perry. Maybe “Monster” applies:

“He ate my heart.
He ay-eight-hate my heart
That boy is a monster.”

At least, the last poll I saw, reported Bill White’s neck and neck. Hope, you see, is on the horizon, see: “So Happy I Could Die.”

She could reveal more with her lyrics, and less with her costumes. Well, i guess you can’t have it all.

“On our first flash of freedom
I called out your name
love it is hard like an overdue train
we felt so much more than our hearts could explain”

Now, compare those lines with the opening lines sung by Jim Morrison in The Doors’ “Waiting for the Sun.” I have taken the liberty to bold the identical words.

“At first flash of Eden, we race down to the sea
standing there on Freedom‘s Shore
waiting for the sun”

Is this a coincidence?

Could Petty and Mike Cambell, the song’s composers, be paying homage to the great Doors anthem?

Morrison asks, “Can you feel it now that spring has come? And it’s time to live in the scattered sun…” while Petty is more interested in “A fistful of glory; a suitcase of sin / The rain which you dream in / When you count to ten.”

“First Flash of Freedom” clocks in at almost seven minutes, and being the first cut of the Heartbreakers’ new record that was released, it was a clear sign to fans and the critics that their new album Mojo is an exercise in self-indulgence and a good study of several jam genres.

On “Don’t Pull Me Over,” what some critics have called a cheesy Rastafarian ripoff, Petty actually sings “(it) should be legalized.”

“When the moonlight turns to blue light
makes me so afraid
let me go, leave me alone
until I’m warm and safe”

Sure — it’s cheesy, but you’ll be rockin’ your head at the riff at the concert.

And “Candy?” I think it’s a track written with the sole purpose of allowing Petty to flex his drawl, and sing about “turnip greens” — previously uncharted territory for Petty and his southern jam band — which he pronounces “toynup grayns.”

Mojo wasn’t penned for the radio — it was penned for the road, for a summer tour that stops in Houston in September. It was supposed to stop here in May, in The Woodlands, but the record wasn’t released on time which pushed back several tour dates and which means that the Houston audience gets to see ZZ-Top open instead of previously scheduled Joe Crocker.

Mojo was released June 15, and it’s the band’s first album in 8 years since 2002′s The Last DJ.

He puts the best song he’s penned since “Square One,” from his 2006 solo effort Highway Companion, in the second-to-last spot on the record. “Something Good Coming” will strike a nerve.

“And I’m an honest man

don’t know where to go

and I know that look that’s on your face
there’s somethin’ lucky about this place
there’s somethin’ good comin’

When I started blogging again this spring, I tried my best to keep posting every workday every week, and occasionally I’d miss a day here or there but I think it’s OK to cease the daily publishing for now, considering I have three paying jobs at the moment. But that’s enough bragging.

And, who knew the small little plant I bought would turn into such a fruit-wielding monster?

Here's a shot of the monster from today, after it finally stopped raining.

I planted the thing up against the fence, planning for it to grow up and be happy. I didn’t know it would instead grow out, and be happy. I’m happy, because on Tuesday, I was able to add my first eggplant to a chicken-mushroom-bell-pepper-and-rice casserole I made for Kim for dinner.

There are at least two fruits on a very healthy plant that keeps growing and blooming. I’ve relocated two pots that were in its proximity to encourage its continued growth.

It’s been my goal to post something every weekday, but because of recent developments – all of which have been good – I’ve been a little preoccupied. But I have been sure to post-date these four posts so that it Appears I’ve been blogging faithfully. But not last Friday – let’s just call that one a blog furlough day.

Onward and upward, people, there’s been a lot of new blooms in the garden this week.

First, let’s take a look at the Psyche Mix cosmos which started to explode in color.

This magenta cosmos from the psyche mix seed packet was actually the first to bloom, earlier this week.

Also to bloom this week were some baby breath, I think, from the mixed cut wildflower seed packet.

Also, the vinca that re-volunteered itself in Kim's bed from last year finally bloomed. The first two that came up, however, I moved to a container then put back in the bed extension. Those aren't growing as quickly as the ones that were left alone.

Other blooms soon to open will be a the purple coneflower which stuck around from last year, as well as some night and day snapdragons and more random wildflowers.

I’ve learned a lot from him at family gatherings when the conversation strays into horticulture territory.

This week, he surprised us with four superfluous plants from his collection, two tomatoes and two peppers.

The new additions: The tall tomato, the short tomato, the short pepper and the tall pepper.

Thanks again, Uncle Bennie and Aunt Kathy for the plants – I’m sure I’ll have a lot of fun trying my hand at them and I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from them, too!

The first fruit just keeps getting bigger.

One likes my shoe. I dunno if it is the same one that took up residence in my shoe all last season.

He's never amused when I have to shake him out of my shoe so I can go and water things.

So, that’s frog number one. There’s a big one that lives underneath Kim’s morning glories. I discovered it when I was trying to get its trelis to stay in place.

Frog number three is one I see wandering around in various places, yesterday when I saw four frogs consecutively, thus proving I’m not making this up, this frog was right under my foot and I almost stepped on him.

And, there was this frog, hanging out in my coleus seedling tray.

The crookneck squash was bought to satisfy my craving for summer squash. Photo taken May 15.

The crookneck squash was actually two plants. Yesterday, the one on the right was down. Dead. That was it. So I cut it at the bottom of the stem. Then, today, this. Sigh.

I think the moral of this this story is don’t buy seedlings with two plants in a tiny 2″ pot. Thin early. I hope that’s the lesson here. Does any one have any other ideas?

The most impressive was a Onagraceae Clarkia Unguiculata, that I originally mistook as “my largest” coleus in this post.

This one must have gotten mixed up with the coleus. It's actually from a cut wildflower seed packet I got from Wal-Mart for 20 cents. The packet called it a Clarkia, but a little internet research revealed its long name.

Kim's morning glory has finally started to bloom.

A purple zinnia blooms. What's unusual about this is that I didn't plant any this year. I did plant a packet of zinnias in late late summer last year, but none ever came up. Hmmm.

It’s freakin’ hot here! But, not so much this week. Pretty windy this week, and I had to do some staking, but that’s another topic.

Without further ado, the new arrivals:

This is a Platycodon-Sentimental Blue, that I picked up for less than $2 at Enchanted Forest. It's also known as a "balloon flower." I put it in the middle of my established original bed.

Here's how I filled in the extended bed where some zinnias and all of the jalapeno transplants I attempted failed. From back to front, from left to right, we've got a cayenne pepper, "long and thin" I think it's called; a Tabasco pepper plant, a pickling cucumber that needs a trellis, a couple of crook-neck squash and a sweet banana pepper plant.

These are two evolvulus nuttallianus, otherwise known as "Blue Daze." They're related to Morning Glories, and they're right in front of Kim's Morning Glory trellis, and their flowers also only open during the first part of the day before it gets too hot.

I had to start a new album in Picasa Web Albums, because the maximum number of photos allowed in one album is 1,000 (lame).

On another note, this week I was a little-less obsessive compulsive with the garden photos, and didn’t shoot any all week, instead opting to shoot only on Saturday.

It's getting too hot in the original bed for the begonias I bought in a 24-pack from Houston Garden Center. So, I pulled two of the best ones out and surrounded the one I left on the porch in this new container that previously held a strawberry, that I planted in the ground. There really is no excuse for the length of that last sentence. And, I added two coleus for good measure.

I saw this in an issue of The Daily Cougar earlier this week.

The issue was full of puzzles and three comics.

It's The Daily Cougar Finals Edition! Back in the day, we didn't have a Finals Edition - unless I remember wrong - and we would have never filled an issue with only puzzles and comics, even if some say that's the only reason it's read. I guess times change.

I made omelets Sunday morning and they turned out really good and so I just want to brag about it.

Speaking of bragging about things, I wrote an article about CLASS staff members who won UH Staff Excellence Awards today.

Speaking of orange babies, over the weekend – when I finally got around to cleaning Corina’s fish tank – I discovered that the fish I just knew was pregenant when I bought it, must have been, because I found its small orange offspring.

Today, there were more blooms – after a rainy, dreary day.

One bloomed in the milk jug that contains four happy ring cosmos.

One bloomed in the front yard, near the house.

And two bloomed in the new bed extension section, between the vegetable containers and the seedlings.

It started with several blooms on the betty prior rose in the front blooming.

Then Kim's yellow rose in the front started putting on a show.

The Marie Daly rose in my bed has been doing well all season.
